The Long Walk

Review: A 2025 adaptation of King’s 1979 dystopian thriller, gosh this movie was so awesome. Here are some texts I sent out after the movie: ‘Bro, just finished the long walk. Grueling watch but it was so good. One of my favorites movies of the year. The premise was so cool and they executed it super well.’ Another text was ‘You should definitely watch the long walk if you get the chance, it was pretty anxiety inducing even though it was pretty slow paced.’ Many people online have been singing praises of this film, and for good reason. It is definitely up there with the best of the best Stephen King adaptations (No, not Shawshank, but to be far that’s like the best movie ever). The film quickly & efficiently filled us in on what we needed to know and was really built on the backs of the dialogue & dynamics of the characters. Like I mentioned in my text, the film was super slow paced (I mean it is literally a movie about a group of people walking) but it had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I got quickly invested in every character and the friendships of those characters so each time we lost one, it was grueling & heartbreaking. Great movie. I’d definitely watch it if you get the chance.

High: The performances in this film were all very solid. The supporting group of boys includes Ben Wang, Charlie Plummer, Garrett Wareing, & Tut Nyuot who all fit their roles really well. Mark Hamill was solid in a short amount of time, bringing a very commanding presence. Cooper Hoffman was especially impressive and I hate to be this guy (because everyone is) but his father bleeds through in the best possible ways of his performances. But the hands down star was David Jonsson. Jonsson is truly the next big thing & his performance is one of the best I’ve seen thus far this year. He won’t, but I’d personally say he should be in Oscar consideration. Stay tuned for the SW/S Awards towards the end of this year because I’m pretty confident he’ll get some love there.

Low: Slight spoilers here. My initial low was that I thought the movie was going to have a super predictable ending. As the film went along it was pretty in line with where I thought it was going. But then the ending happened. And it actually subverted my expectations. So it’s not my low, anymore. I was actually super pleased. So I have no low.
