Friendship
Review: This 2024 film that got a wide release earlier this year and just dropped on HBO Max so I was able to finally watch it. Starring Tim Robinson as an awkward marketing exec that befriends a local weatherman, played by Paul Rudd. And let me just say it was so refreshing watching Rudd in this because he sucked in ‘Death of a Unicorn’ and was so much better in this. There were several scenes that had me cackling, especially the whole boxing scene and ensuing events. Also the whole scene where Craig (Robinson) visits Austin (Rudd) at work and his coworker asks if Craig is his father, hilarious. And then the scene with Craig in the phone store. And then when he goes back into the phone store later. Hilarious. Robinson’s voice over towards the end of the film was really funny too. Just one thing after another really. Tim Robinson is a comedic genius, with every one liner & expression being so methodical. I personally eat it up. The film had a really solid score (there were a couple crescendos in the score that almost sounded like ‘Interstellar’) and was well edited, but the performances of Robinson & Rudd are what makes this film what it is. As per usual with Robinson’s projects the film gets wilder and wilder and goes completely off the rails by the end. Definitely one of the best comedy movies I’ve watched this year.
High/Low: Tim Robinson’s brand of humor isn’t for everyone. If you’re not familiar with him but are thinking about watching this, I’d definitely say check out an episode of his show ‘I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson’ on Netflix. Or at least look up some clips on TikTok. If those make you chuckle, you’ll likely enjoy this film. If you don’t like those/his brand of humor, you won’t like this. Personally I find him utterly hilarious so I really enjoyed this film. It’s very dry, yet equally absurd humor, but it gets a laugh from me every time. So that’s why I have this here because it will either be your high or low depending on your opinion of his humor.
