My 2025 Film Statistics

Oh 2025 what a year you’ve been. I’ve had a really good year personally, but that’s not what we’re talking about. What we are going to be talking about is my 2025 movie journey. I watched an impressive 493 films in 2024, and had a goal of 500 in 2025. And I did meet that goal. In October. I ended the year with 610 films watched. 610 films in a year averages out to the following: 50.8 films per month, 11.7 films per week, and 1.7 films per day. Yep. Go ahead and judge me, it’s fine. I like movies okay?! We are going to go through the stats of those 610 films, using my own personal log that I kept cross references with my Letterboxd stats. I’m not going to include all the information I get from my Letterboxd wrapped because it doesn’t really contribute to my statistics here, though I’m sure I’ll post it somewhere.

I should caveat that I’m not including any short films here (I consider anything under 45 minutes a short film), though I did watch 48 of those as well. I also watched 17 full length films for a screening committee I’m apart of, but none of those films are released yet and I’m not supposed to say anything about those, so they’re excluded from that 610 total.

The total runtime of all the films I watched was 1,163 hours which is admittedly a lot. That’s over 48 full days of movie watching… This feels like a good time to say that I have no goal for movie watching in 2026 and I will likely not reach or eclipse the 600 movie mark again.

The average movie runtime was 114 minutes, which feels on par. There were 9 films that I watched that were under 70 minutes long (but obviously over 45 since they made this list). Those films were ‘Brett Goldstein: Second Best Night of Your Life,’ ‘Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers,’ ‘Who Killed Captain Alex?,’ ‘Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas,’ ‘Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas,’ ‘Mickey’s Magical Christmas,’ ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,’ ‘The Year Without a Santa Claus,’ and ‘A Miser Brothers’ Christmas.’ ‘Who Killed Captain Alex?’ was the shortest live action film at 68 minutes, while ‘A Miser Brothers’ Christmas’ was the shortest overall at 48 minutes.

There were 8 films that I watched that were over 190 minutes: ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ ‘Titanic,’ ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ ‘The Godfather: Part II,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ and the three extended edition ‘Lord of the Rings’ films. The longest was ‘Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ extended edition which is 264 minutes long, while the longest non-extended film was ‘The Brutalist’ at 215 minutes.

With my personal log, I rate films out of 10, and my average was 6.99 out of 10. There were 52 films that I gave a 10/10, and I feel like it’s worth noting that a project I did this year was rewatching my top 100 favorite films, which definitely contributes to this total. Plus, I just love movies so I tend to rate them positively. There were 8 films that I gave a 1.5/10 and 3 that I gave a 1/10. The three 1/10s were ‘Kazaam,’ ‘The Crow’ (2025), and ‘Madame Web.’

I break the films I watch into three categories. New Watches, which are films released in 2025 or films that got their first wide release in 2025. First Time Watches, which is any not new release I watched for the first time. Finally, Rewatches, which is any film I had already seen at some point and watched again. There were 176 (29%) new watches, though only 163 made it into my 2025 Letterboxd list because the other 13 were documentaries or non-narrative films. There were 246 (40%) first time watches and 187 (31%) rewatches.

My first film of the year was ‘Wicked’ when I saw the sing along version in theaters with my wife on New Years Day, and my final film of the year was ‘Stranger Things 5: The Finale,’ if you want to count that as a movie, which I do. If you don’t, then my last film of the year was ‘Zootopia.’  ‘Wicked’ was my most watched film of the year, watching it four times. I watched ‘F1’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’ three times each, with all of those viewings coming in theaters. The other films I watched multiple times were ‘28 Years Later,’ ‘Barbie,’ ‘Better Man,’ ‘Challengers,’ ‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Conclave,’ ‘How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies,’ ‘Jaws,’ ‘Sinners,’ ‘Superman’ (2025), and ‘Weapons,’ all of which I watched twice. And while we’re talking about rewatches I will say that those play into all the other statistics. For example, ‘Wicked’ will add 4 films to whatever categories it may fit into on all the other stats we discuss.

When it comes to years the films came out, 2025 was the heavy leader. I had 157 watches with a 2025 release date, followed by 2024 with 95 films. The decade spread was as follows:

  • 2020s: 304 films

  • 2010s: 119 films

  • 2000s: 86 films

  • 1990s: 47 films

  • 1980s: 25 films

  • 1970s: 10 films

  • 1960s: 7 films

  • 1950s: 3 films

  • 1940s: 6 films

  • 1930s: 1 film

  • 1920s: 1 film

I guess I should put some more focus on older films?

I watched 40 films that were in a language other than English, plus 2 films that had no dialogue. The languages I experienced were Arabic (2), Bemba (1), Cantonese (1), Danish (1), Dari (1), Farsi (2), Finnish (1), French (5), German (2), Hungarian (1), Irish (1), Japanese (3), Korean (4), Lingala (1), Luganda (1), Mandarin (2), Norwegian (1), Portuguese (1), Russian (1), Samoan (1), Spanish (4), Thai (2), and Wolof (1).

I had 57 in theater watches and I actually have a separate (much shorter) article on that. You can that read that here.

There were 234 films that I watched for a specific reason, whether that was a blog article, YouTube video, personal project, TikTok, or for the Oscars. All the rest were just because.

I watched 70 films with my wife, so shoutout to her for agreeing to that. I also watched 35 films with my son, though I use the term watching with him very loosely.

I break films down into 9 different main genres and the spread of that was as follows:

  • Action: 84 (13.7%)

  • Animated: 75 (12.3%)

  • Comedy: 166 (27.3%)

  • Documentary: 20 (3.3%)

  • Drama: 155 (25.5%)

  • Fantasy: 34 (5.5%)

  • Horror: 26 (4.3%)

  • Sci-Fi: 42 (6.9%)

  • Western: 7 (1.1%)

I spent a lot of time with a lot of directors this year. Here were the directors I watched multiple movies with, starting with all the directors with 3 movies that I watched in 2025:

  • Michael Bay - ‘6 Underground,’ ‘Bad Boys,’ and ‘Pain & Gain’

And then all the directors I watched 4 movies of:

  • Chad Stahelski - John Wick Chapters 1-4

  • Quentin Tarantino - ‘Django Unchained,’ ‘Inglorious Basterds,’ ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’

Followed by 5 directors with 5 films:

  • Chris Columbus - The first two Harry Potter films, Home Alone 1 & 2, and ‘The Thursday Murder Club’

  • Ron Howard - The 3 Robert Langdon films, ‘Eden,’ and ‘Willow’

  • Francis Lawrence - The Hunger Games 2-4, ‘Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,’ and ‘The Long Walk’

  • Steven Spielberg - ‘Amistad,’ ‘Jaws’ twice, ‘Jurassic Park,’ and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’

  • Denis Villeneuve - ‘Arrival,’ ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ ‘Prisoners,’ and ‘Sicario’

And then 2 directors with 6 films:

  • Jon M. Chu - ‘Now You See Me 2,’ ‘Wicked’ four times, and ‘Wicked: For Good’

  • Peter Jackson - All three Lord of the Rings films and all three Hobbit film

And the leader of the pack was Paul Thomas Anderson because I watched all 10 of his films!

And when it comes to actors there were a small handful with whom I watched 10 or more films of in 2025. The actors I watched 10 movies that featured them were Willem Dafoe, Will Ferrell, Samuel L. Jackson, John Ratzenberger, J.K. Simmons, and Alan Tudyk. There were two actors that I watched 11 movies of, Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

But my most watched actor of 2025? Well come on. Leading the way with 19 films logged was of course, Timothée Chalamet. My guy.

And with that, my 2025 film statistics come to an end. I guess we’ll see what patterns continue into 2026, but until then… Happy Watching!
