Top 10 Co-Stars Who Played Couples Multiple Times
Sometimes, co-stars have such electric chemistry and enjoy working with each other so much, they do several movies together. And sometimes, a real life couple will team up several times to make a slew of movies together. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we’re going to look at 10 times actors played couples several times. The threshold to make this list is at least 3, but I’ll note that this isn’t a Top 10 List where I’ll list the actors who have played couples the most times, just 10 I wanted to talk about.
Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone (3) - One of the best modern examples, Gosling & Stone first played a couple in the 2011 rom com ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ before reuniting in ‘Gangster Squad.’ There most famous iteration as a couple is easily as Seb & Mia in ‘La La Land’ for which they both received Oscar nominations, with Stone winning. ‘La La Land’ is one of the most popular & acclaimed films of the 21st century and this has led to many fans wanting the two to reunite once again.
Drew Barrymore & Adam Sandler (3) - Adam Sandler is known for often acting with the same group of people in his films. But I’d say the costar most often associated with him is likely Drew Barrymore. They teamed up 3 times in ‘The Wedding Singer,’ ‘50 First Dates,’ & ‘Blended,’ and I wouldn’t be shocked if they team up again somewhere down the road.
Keanu Reeves & Winona Ryder (3) - In the 1992 film ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ Reeves & Ryder play the Harkers, a couple crucial to the Dracula story. Their second time playing a couple came in the 2006 adult animated comedy from Richard Linklater, ‘A Scanner Darkly.’ Then in 2018 they reunited once again for the romantic dramedy, ‘Destination Wedding.’ Ryder has joked that the couple may actually be married due to a real priest performing a wedding ceremony during the filming of Dracula.
Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman (3) - Another real life couple who acted together, Cruise & Kidman, first starred together in 1990’s ‘Days of Thunder,’ and they got married after meeting on set. This was followed up in 1992 with ‘Far and Away’ in which the couple played Irish immigrants looking to take part in the 1893 Oklahoma Land Run. Their final & most well known team up was in Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ an erotic psychological drama. The couple would go on to get divorced a couple of years later.
Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell (4) - The first real life couple on the list, these two have been together in real life since 1983. They played love interests in the rom com, ‘Overboard’ and the romantic drama, ‘Swing Shift’ from 1987 & 1984, respectively. They reunited onscreen in 2018’s ‘The Christmas Chronicles’ in which Russell plays Santa & Hawn cameos as Mrs. Claus and they join forces again in the sequel.
Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan (4) - Hanks & Ryan starred in two of the most well known rom coms of the 90s in ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ and ‘You’ve Got Mail.’ Prior to that, they starred in the 1990 film ‘Joe Versus the Volcano’ and they would later on star as a married couple in ‘Ithaca’ in 2015.
Lauren Bacall & Humphrey Bogart (4) - Married in 1945 until Bogart’s 1957 death, this real life couple that was one of Hollywood’s most famous duos met on set of ‘To Have and Have Not.’ They starred together in three more films in three years: ‘The Big Sleep,’ ‘Dark Passage,’ & ‘Key Largo.’ After Bogart’s death, Bacall would often speak about him and his legendary onscreen work.
Katharine Hepburn & Spencer Tracy (8) - Though these two never tied the note, they had a personal relationship that lasted for over 25 years, until Tracy’s death. The couple appeared in 9 films together starting with 1942’s ‘Woman of the Year’ where they met on set and their final film coming out in 1967’s ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ The two’s relationship was an open secret in Hollywood, but was never discussed in public by either of them until well after Tracy’s death.
Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers (10) - These two actors appeared as co-stars and dance partners in 10 films, 9 of which came out between 1933 and 1939, with one more coming in 1949. The most popular of these was likely ‘Top Hat.’ In 1950 when Astaire was given an Honorary Academy Award, Rogers was the one who presented him the award.
Myrna Loy & William Powell (14) - Between 1934 and 1947 this couple starred in 13 films together, with their last on screen appearance together coming in 1947’s ‘The Senator Was Indiscreet’ in which Powell starred and Loy had a cameo. Many of their team ups came from playing the characters of Nick & Nora Charles starting in ‘The Thin Man.’
