“Wuthering Heights”
Review: “Well that was a doozy! That’s all you have to say.” - My wife when I told her I was going to write my review. I honestly agree because I have no idea what to say about this movie. As I’m writing this I have zero clue what score to give it. A 3.5? A 5? Maybe a 7.5? I guess we’ll see. There’s some really high highs and some really low lows. It was really weird. If you decide to see it you need to prep for something really weird. And it was funny. But also devastatingly sad. I cried a tad and my wife sobbed at the end of the movie. The craftsmanship was impressive & I’d guess it would get nominations at the 99th Academy Awards for costumes, hair & makeup, production design, and maybe even cinematography. But since it did release so early into ‘26, it will probably get lost in the shuffle for most other than costume design. The performances were good. This feels like a good time to say I have not read the original book, so none of my analysis comes from any comparison to the source material. That being said, I still felt that Margot Robbie was potentially miscast. She’s a great actress and had some good moments, but I feel as though someone else could’ve slid into the role more effectively. Jacob Elordi was solid as Heathcliff. He was also incredibly handsome. I do think Elordi is one of the best young actors in Hollywood and he’s rising up on my intrigue list (meaning I’m intrigued in a project if he’s attached). I thought Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, & Alison Oliver were all very good in supporting roles; and I really need to shoutout the two actors that play a young Catherine & Heathcliff. Charlotte Mellington plays a young Cathy and manages to bring the exact same energy to the role that Robbie does, which is impressive. And man Owen Cooper (of ‘Adolescence’ fame) gave my favorite performance of the film as a young Heathcliff. His performance was so impactful and the tears I shed were because of him.
High: The film was a visual rollercoaster. The costumes, sets, and imagery were all over the place, with some good and some not so good. But it definitely will keep you engaged so I will commend that.
Low: I don’t even know where to go here. The movie was trying to really hard to be ‘erotic’ and I just don’t think that landed since our entire theater chuckled anytime something landed differently than it was likely intended.
Rating: 5/10 (I decided to go with a middle of the road score for now since the film felt a little all over the place)
