Project Hail Mary
Review: Amaze amaze amaze. I know, it’s taken me a while to get this review out, but life has been busy, and I’ve had other priorities. There will be probably be a slight decrease in articles as a whole in April, but it should pick back up in May. I honestly even struggle to write this review. Because every single part of this movie rocked. I absolutely loved it. I think it will likely end up being my favorite film of 2026 and I could just sit here and continuously sing it’s praises. The visual effects were stunning. The score rocked. I think this was Ryan Gosling’s career performance. The puppetry & CGI that made Rocky was brilliant. The writing was stellar, especially in the scenes with the dynamic duo that is Grace & Rocky. I’ll honestly keep this brief and you can certainly engage me in real life if you want more thoughts on the film. I’d be happy to share. I just have to say, that if you haven’t seen this movie… go see it!
High: This is a perfect adaptation in my eyes. And let me explain what I mean by that. For me, a perfect adaptation is not a one to one. That’s just a waste of time. ‘Project Hail Mary’ is my favorite book. I think it’s a master piece. And if I wanted the story told to me exactly like it is in the book… I’d read the book (or listen to the audiobook wonderfully narrated by Ray Porter). A book as dense as PHM needs some things cut for a film adaptation. That’s just the truth. And the filmmakers did a great job choosing what things to keep, remove, or alter. For an adaptation to be faithful, it doesn’t have to be exact. The film got the same core points & dynamics from the book to us. Even if we didn’t get to see them nuke Antarctica like they do in the book.
Low: My only low is that I really could’ve use more of Lionel Boyce as Carl. Where? No clue. But he & Gosling were playing brilliantly off each other and were a good little bromance that will (rightfully) be overshined (overshown?) by Grace & Rocky.
