Champagne Problems
Review: Another of Netflix’s Christmas rom com drops, this one stars Minka Kelly as a businesswoman traveling to France to try and acquire the business of a prestigious champagne company for her company. And the catch? It’s Christmas! And she’s going to fall in love! Sorry for the spoilers. The movie goes down a familiar trajectory but has good chemistry between the leads, some fun side characters, and a really gorgeous setting, so all the right ingredients for the recipe. Aside from Kelly, the rest of the cast is likely unfamiliar to your average American viewer, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Overall, the film is your basic Christmas direct to streaming rom com, but the France setting gives it that charm you get in ‘Emily in Paris’ and the final season of ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty.’ Also, bonus points for the title sharing a name with a Taylor Swift song.
High: This is a really weird high, but something I really appreciated when watching the movie. I liked how when the French characters were speaking to each other (and sometimes even to the English speakers) they were speaking French. I get the real world reason of putting an entire film in English to make it an easier digest for the average viewer, but as someone whose going to watch a movie and analyze it no matter what, I like when small extra steps are taken. This to me is one of those steps and I’m glad they took it here! Personally I watch most everything with captions anyways.
Low: I like Minka Kelly, but I feel as though her character was the one I was the least interested in. She wasn’t bad and they have her a nice little arc, but I feel like we should’ve gotten to spend some more initial time with her before we got rolling into the story. But even saying that, I didn’t dislike her character, and my feelings were more positive than neutral. So I guess I don’t know what my low is.
