There Will Be Blood
Review: The film considered by many to be PTA’s magnum opus, I’d have to agree, at least based on the films I’ve watched so far. Winning 2 Oscars on 8 nominations, the film is considered to be career best work for Anderson, as well as leading man Daniel Day-Lewis. The standout for me was really Paul Dano, who somehow managed to NOT get an Oscar nomination. Dano’s performance was incredible & really helped make Day-Lewis’s all-time performance what it is. This is definitely the most mainstream of PTA’s films & is certainly one that needs a watch if it has somehow alluded you like it did me.
High: Those two lead performances were almost my high, but I need to go with the visuals & cinematography. There are a ton of awing shots in this film, and it’s one that after I watched it, I wish I could see it on an IMAX screen.
Low: Though the runtime isn’t too hefty, 158 minutes could maybe be a little unpalpable for some. The reason I’m putting it here is because so much of that runtime is filled with a lack of dialogue, especially in the first 2/3s of the film. I was honestly kind of stunned how little talking there was, but it does lean on a lot of visual storytelling, which can often be a good thing.
