The Rip

Review: Who’s your favorite acting couple? Brangelina? Bennifer? Other Bennifer? Mine is Mattfleck. Matt Damon & Ben Affleck reunite once more in this action crime thriller that dropped last week on Netflix, and they’ve done it again. This movie was a solid watch, and better than you may expect. Also starring Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, & Scott Adkins, the film focuses on a group of Miami narcotics officers who perform a raid on a stash house, and their trust in one another is tested when they find more than they bargained for. The film is 113 minutes long and the first 80-90 minutes are really great. Then the remainder of the film is just okay. I think they maybe lost it a bit towards the end, which is not unusual for Netflix features, but it wasn’t fumbled bad enough to taint the film as a whole. Aside from the dynamic duo, I really liked Steven Yeun’s performance. He’s one of those actors that just improves every project he’s in. Oh yeah, and we also got a good dog performance from the unit’s resident K-9. I’d say if you like a crime thriller this movie is definitely worth checking out on Netflix. I feel like the action wasn’t quite as prevalent as those other two aspects, but when it was there it was good.

High: Honestly, even though the ending wasn’t great, the twists and turns that got us there were quite fun. We got to spend individual time with a lot of the characters and the film had a nice whodunnit aspect, even getting a little exposition dump at the end when we learn who the perpetrator is.

Low: Scott Adkins was good as Ben Affleck’s character’s brother. But it seems to be a missed opportunity to just slide Casey Affleck in there and let us get the whole trifecta. Also the ending was the actual low. They just really didn’t land the plane on this one. Which is okay, because Damon & Affleck are good enough it works anyways.
