Mountainhead
Review: I know people feel that we don’t need another movie about rich people. But also like, what does that even mean? Countless films have been made about every topic so I don’t fully get that. But anyways, this film did the rich people thing well. It was outlandish and absurd, growing more insane as it progresses, but remains relevant and managed to hit a lot of notes. The film follows 4 billionaires (kind of) played by Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, & Ramy Youssef. Carell is the older mentor of the group with Youssef playing a more grounded and socially conscious AI-tech CEO and Smith playing the CEO of a social media platform who is the richest man in the group & world, for that matter. Finally is Schwartzman’s character who is constantly belittled & trying to prove himself to his friends since he is only worth a measly & pitiful half billion. The film is very modern and is the directorial debut of Jesse Armstrong, the creator of ‘Succession.’ The film is tonally similar to Armstrong’s hit show, though is a little more comedic.
High: The four performers featured in this all play off each other really well and really fit well into their characters. I particularly enjoyed Schwartzman & Youssef’s performances though all four were very entertaining. The group dynamics, ulterior motives, and political power plays were all very well executed
Low: The ending. It was disappointing & doesn’t really wrap up the story, at least not in a satisfying way. A film this out there probably needed an out there ending, and it just didn’t have that. I feel like it just kind of petered out and ended. Solid film overall but the ending falling flat knocked it down a notch.
