Marty Supreme
Review: I said this in my TikTok. I said it on my Letterboxd. And I’ll say it hear and to anyone that will listen. Timothée Chalamet is the greatest to ever do it. He just locked in his Oscar and if he doesn’t win, the Academy is wrong. This whole is an absolute master class from Chalamet, with the actor hitting every note intended. I expected for this film to make me laugh (it did), I expected for this film to make me sweaty (it did), I expected for this film to be one of my favorites of the year (it is), and even though I didn’t expect it to make me cry, it did. There are really good supporting performances from Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’Zion, Kevin O’Leary, and Tyler, the Creator, as well as a ton of, what I’ll call, character performances, mostly from unknown or non-professional actors. The plot goes all over the place, which should be expected from a Josh Safdie film, and speaking of which, Josh Safdie really prove that when it comes to filmmaking, he’s the brother with more sauce. The film was really visually appealing with the signature Safdie look and even though the film is about so much more than ping pong, the ping pong scenes are some of the highlights. I love the fun semifinals match point between Marty & Bela. The score was really good, and the film used well known songs really effectively to convey exactly what it was wanting to. I think I’d say this is my movie of the year (I’ll give it a rewatch and reevaluate that) and just want to end by saying happy 30th birthday to Mr. Marty Mauser himself, Timothée Chalamet. Having the resume he does at 30 is utterly insane and I can’t even express to you how bought I am into the Timmy hype.
High: TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET. The film itself is fantastic and the hype around it is even more fantastic, all of which was generated by Timmy. I think he is just such a movie star on and off the screen because he’s willing to do whatever is necessary to make his film a success.
Low: My only single low with the film is that Fred Hechinger didn’t have more screen time. I like him a lot.
