Jurassic World Rebirth

Review: I’m sure I don’t need to tell you too much about this movie as I would imagine it may be the highest grossing US film this year. Or at least somewhere near the top. Starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, & Mahershala Ali, this is planned to be the start of a new trilogy in the familiar world we’ve spent 6 prior films in. Though this film doesn’t reach the height of some of its predecessors (none of these film will ever be able to touch the original), it isn’t as bad as many of the other films, landing somewhere in the middle. That aforementioned lead trio are all very solid with the rest of the supporting cast, Rupert Friend, Ed Skrein, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, Audrina Miranda, & David Iacono, also sliding smoothly into their roles. Special shoutout to Iacono who was getting a ton of laughs in my theater. And that right there serves as the point for these films. The theater. Mine was packed out with a wide demographic in the audience. People were laughing, gasping, oo-ing, and aw-ing all at the right times. While this may not be a movie for the cinephile, it is one that will drive wide audiences to the theater, and I think that’s great.

High: If you weren’t aware, there are dinosaurs in this movie. And dinosaurs are cool. Oh yeah, another high is Jonathan Bailey. He gave my favorite performance from the film. And he’s handsome! A classic win-win.

Low: The movie certainly had its faults. There were some things that were hard to believe (yes, even in a world filled with dinosaurs) but I feel that maybe the biggest fault was trying to do too much with the characters. I’m all for developing out and building your characters. But it felt as though they were really trying to give these characters layers, depths, history, & relationships when it’s not at all necessary. Just throw some folks in there with the dinosaurs and let everything else come naturally. We don’t need to know everything about these characters and the motivation behind what they do, we just need to see them do it. Show us, don’t tell us. Originally, I thought the low would be that the ensemble just had too much going on, but the film actually managed to balance that pretty well.

Rating: 8/10 (listen, I understand that score is higher than it should be, but I just had so much fun with this movie. Dinosaurs are cool, so there’s only so low I can go because dinos were on full display)
