A Minecraft Movie

Review: I don’t even care, this movie was so fun. This is the most fun I’ve had watching a movie in theaters this year. The best thing a movie can do is to be self aware, and ‘A Minecraft Movie’ knows exactly what it is and who it’s for. I was genuinely cracking up throughout the entire film because it was just so silly. It didn’t take itself seriously and leaned into it’s goofy premise. It’s by no means a great movie, but it knows that and doesn’t try to be. The visual effects were honestly very good and were exactly what they should have been for a live action Minecraft film. The cast was very solid and it really felt like everyone was having fun. Jason Momoa was cringey, but that was the intention, so good on him. The young siblings of Emma Myers & Sebastian Hansen kept up with their more experienced costars quite well. I laughed every time Jennifer Coolidge randomly popped up and actually thought the side story with her was quite funny. The voice performances of Rachel House & Jared Hess as Malgosha & General Chungus were what they needed to be. Danielle Brooks admittedly was the person I thought fit the least in this film, but maybe that’s just because she’s a Tony & Oscar nominated actress. And Jack Black. He just fully committed to this & I love him for that. His jokes were hitting for me. His physical comedy was perfect for a movie of this nature. He legitimately just broke out into random song four times. And I felt emotions I don’t know if I have ever felt before when he uttered the lines ‘flint and steel,’ ‘chicken jockey,’ and of course, ‘I am Steve.’

High: Like I said, the fun I had watching this movie has got to be the high. I also appreciate that the filmmakers knew who they were making this film for and included a ton of jokes & references those people would understand. Also, I thought the Techno Blade homage was perfect & a nice inclusion.

Low: After we got the little intro from Steve, I think the film spent way too much time in the real world before getting back into the Overworld. I appreciate that it was trying to give us some dynamics & background for the characters, but I think we really just needed some quick intros.

Rating: IDK/10 Unironically my viewing experience was a 10, but the film itself was nowhere near that, so I’m going call it a 7 and be happy with that.
