Top 10 Movie Planets
Now I’m not talking about Planet Hollywood here. I’m referring to fictional planets on the big screen, most of which will obviously come from Sci-Fi or Sci-Fi adjacent movies. The planets don’t have to have been original to a film, with planets originally from books or comics being allowed here. I’m only going to include one planet per franchise, otherwise this would be 10 Star Wars planets.
Tatooine (‘Star Wars’) - Like I said, this list could’ve just been Star Wars planets. And man there are a ton of options. Naboo, Coruscant, Hoth, Yavin IV, Endor (I know it’s a moon but I’ll allow it), Jakku, Kashyyyk, Geonosis, Alderaan, Kijimi, Kamino, Dagobah, Bespin, & Mustafar are just a few of the planets we encounter in the wider Star Wars universe and are also just the ones I could quickly name off the top of my head. Please don’t tell my wife what a nerd I am! (jk she knows). But I’d be extremely hard pressed to put any planet other than Tatooine, as it is the one that we visit the most & introduces us to the two most important characters in the entire franchise. Yes it’s just a big ball of sand. And yes, sand is coarse, rough irritating, and gets everywhere, but the planet being synonymous with the last name Skywalker is enough for me.
Pandora (‘Avatar’) - One of the most fully developed planets (technically a moon) on this list (at least when it comes to movie lore), it’s almost shocking we’ve only seen Pandora in two (about to be three) movies. Wow, I’m really going crazy with the parenthesis comments on this one. If you’re ever curious about how to read my writing, those are like my internal comments while I’m writing. Anyways. Home to the Na’vi people, Pandora is a lush planet that’s all connected through it’s ‘deity,’ Eywa. I’d have to say of the fictional planets we’ve seen in movies that Pandora is the most visually stunning.
Arrakis (‘Dune’) - My Desert. My Arrakis. My Dune. Power over spice is power over all. INSERT OTHER DUNE QUOTES HERE.
Krypton (DC) - Though we don’t get to visit Krypton in the newest Superman film, we still get to see parts of its culture and the effect that culture has on Kal-El. But in the OG Christopher Reeve ‘Superman’ we get to spend a ton of time on the planet and a ton of time with Marlon Brando’s lazy performance as Jor-El.
Ego (Marvel Cinematic Universe) - I thought about putting Asgard here, but it’s actually classified as a ‘plane’ within the Nine Realms. What’s the difference? No clue, but I’m playing it safe. That meant there were a couple options for planets, most of which come from the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy or later Avengers films, like Xandar & Vormir. But I’ll go with Ego, because we spend a lot of time there in Guardians Vol. 2. Ego is a living planet that coincidentally takes the form of Kurt Russell. Oh and it’s Chris Pratt’s dad.
Vulcan (Star Trek) - I know only an iota of information about Star Trek. I know Spock is a Vulcan. And the Vulcans come from Vulcan. So that leads me to believe that Vulcan must appear at some point across the franchise? Though for all I know it could only appear in the TV series making it ineligible for this list. I’m a Wars guy though, not Trek, so it beats me.
Cybertron (‘Transformers’) - Cybertron confuses me because Transformers lore kind of confuses me. But I do know that the Transformers come from there and the best Transformers movie, ‘Transformers One’ takes place on it.
Miller’s Planet (‘Interstellar’) - So we visit a few new planets in the greatest sci-fi movie ever made, but none of them have official names (as far as I know), just an astronaut associated with them. I think this water planet is the most interesting, mostly due to the time dilation & effect that plays on the story. Every hour spent on the planet is seven Earth years. I actually just read a tweet that since the release on ‘Interstellar’ in 2014, less than an hour and a half would’ve passed on this planet. Trippy.
LV-223 (‘Prometheus’) - I think this is technically a moon, but I’ll allow it. The Alien lore is mad confusing, but I think this planet is meant to be like where the Aliens actually come from? Though it’s likely I’m just confused.
Treasure Planet - Wrapping up is the titular planet from the 2002 Disney film, which is based on the island from Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island.’ One of Disney’s underrated outings, this film features some great characters, cool settings, & a fun premise, all focused on a planet filled with… you guessed it, treasure!
