The Best Werewolf Movies
After writing the list of the best vampire movies, I decided to write some lists about some other classic monster movies. The natural follow up to a vampire list, is their natural adversary, the werewolf. OW OW OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.
The Wolfman - Similar to Dracula, when most people think werewolf, they associate it with this classic Universal monster from the 1941 film, which can be streamed on Peacock. Heavily influencing modern interpretations of werewolves, this film stars Lon Chaney Jr. in the lead role of Larry Talbot. Chaney had several other appearances as the Wolf Man, and there have been two modern reboots of the character. A 2010 remake starred Benicio del Toro in the lead role and be rented on digital. There was also a not very well received 2025 remake which can be streamed on Prime.
Werewolf of London - Despite popular belief, ‘The Wolfman’ was not the original werewolf film, with this 1935 film, also from Universal, preceding it. The film warns the audience to ‘Beware the stalking being - half human - half beast!’ and can be found on Peacock. The film would lend part of it’s title to a later film called…
An American Werewolf in London - Combining the name of the previous film with the 1951 Best Picture winning ‘An American in Paris’ this 1981 horror comedy follows American backpackers who are attacked by a werewolf on a European hike, resulting in one of them beginning to turn. It can be streamed for free on Tubi.
An American Werewolf in Paris - Serving as a pseudo-sequel, this 1997 horror comedy doesn’t actually feature an reference to the first film other than the title and general concept. Starring Tom Everett Scott as the wolf and Julie Delpy as his romantic interest, the film can be streamed on Prime or free on Tubi.
Teen Wolf - Prior to the popular MTV series in the 2010s, there was this coming of age comedy with Michael J. Fox as Scott Howard, a teenager who inherits his family curse of lycanthropy. Scott’s new found wolf abilities bring him basketball success, popularity, & luck with the ladies resulting in some iconic moments from Fox. Stream it on Paramount+.
Werewolves Within - Based on the video game of the same name, this 2021 horror comedy follows a group of townspeople investigating presumed werewolf attacks. Though the film didn’t garner immediate popularity due to it’s limited releases, it is actually the highest rated video game adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. You can check it out for yourself on Hulu or free on Tubi.
Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban - Okay, so this isn’t a werewolf movie, just a movie with a werewolf. But I’m counting it because I like any opportunity to mention Harry Potter! Stream the whole Harry Potter series on Peacock or HBO Max.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon - Yeah, I’ll stand on business and say this is more of a werewolf movie than a vampire movie. All the other 4? Absolutely vampire movies that feature werewolves. But in this one, Jacob Black & the Pack take a more central role than the Cullen family, so I’m including them on the list. Stream it on Hulu.
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - I promise I won’t double up on any more movies/franchises that were on my vampire list. Again, I think this series overall revolves more around vampires, and although they appear in this one, I’ll call this a werewolf movie. Kate Beckinsale doesn’t take the lead role like she does in the other movies, in fact she doesn’t appear at all. The main characters is Michael Sheen’s Lucian, who is a Lycan (werewolf). Stream it on Starz.
Silver Bullet - A 1985 horror film based on the Stephen King novella, ‘Cycle of the Werewolf,’ this film stars Gary Busey, Everett McGill, & Corey Haim. I won’t spoil who plays the wolf in this one, but if you want to discover that for yourself, stream it for free on Pluto TV.
Wolfwalkers - Earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, this 2020 film uses a 2D animation styled to look like wooden blocks and follows a young hunter looking to annihilate the last wolf pack in Ireland. She encounters a young girl who is part of a tribe rumored to be able to turn into wolves themselves, uncovering secrets along the way. Stream it on Apple TV.
Werewolves - A 2024 action horror film, this one follows the world trying to prepare for the annual supermoon event which will cause humans to turn into werewolves for one night. The film didn’t fare well critically or commercially, but can be streamed on Hulu.
Werewolf by Night - This is categorized as a television special, not a movie, but it’s 53 minutes long, so I’m counting it here. One of Marvel’s special presentations that dropped straight to Disney+, I actually think this is an extremely solid standalone special. You don’t need any prior context of the MCU, and as of writing, it has yet to connect to the larger MCU in any way. The original version was in black and white (and I think is cooler), but there’s also a fully color version available, both on Disney+.
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit - Yes, this follows a were-rabbit, not a werewolf. But I’m including it because I can and want to. Featuring the most iconic claymation duo there is, this film actually won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and first feature length film for Wallace & Gromit. Rent it on digital.
The Boy Who Cried Werewolf - I included a Disney Channel Original Movie on my vampires list, so I’ll include a Nickelodeon one here. Starring Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice, the film follows a nerdy girl & her family who inherit a castle in Romania. She becomes infected with werewolf blood and must work with her brother to figure out what to do next. Stream it on Paramount+.
